Who We Are

CoolSys Energy Design, formerly known as Energy Squared (E2), is a consulting engineering firm providing single-source MEPR (mechanical, electrical, plumbing and refrigeration) engineering analysis and design for both new construction and existing building remodels. In addition, CoolSys Energy Design offers building performance modeling and energy simulations as well as feasibility studies for sustainable and energy-efficient facility energy systems.

Meet The Team

Our CoolSys Energy Design team draws on the deep expertise of over 100 professional engineers, designers, and sustainable design and energy professionals. Our highly talented staff includes licensed Professional Engineers (PE), U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professionals (LEED APs), Association of Energy Engineers Certified Energy Managers (CEMs), National Association of Home Builders Certified Green Professionals (CGPs) and Building Performance Institute Professionals (BPIs) all with a passion for delivering innovative, sustainable, lower carbon output designs for all of our clients.

BEN ROSENZWEIG, PE

VICE PRESIDENT and GENERAL MANAGER

Ben Rosenzweig brings his broad experience with the commercial, industrial, and large-scale residential markets to CoolSys Energy Design to lead the company, projects, and clients towards a more sustainable, lower carbon emissions, and more energy efficient future every day. Starting his career at ExxonMobil prior to joining Energy Squared, which then became CoolSys Energy Design, he has worked his way into the company’s leadership role and brings many years of wide-ranging experience with him, Ben focuses on creating an environment where his passion for innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurialism drive both the success of the engineers and designers working for the company as well as the projects that our clients trust us to develop.

Ben is a graduate of the College of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics at Lehigh University with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. He is also a licensed Professional Engineer in 18 states.

CHRISTOPHER CUPO

VICE PRESIDENT

Chris has over 15 years experience in construction management, and offers a wealth of knowledge and experience in resolving on-site construction problems and issues. Chris has a unique capability of uncovering solutions to complex MEPR construction related issues. Chris has many years of involvement with plumbing design, bidding, cost estimating and commissioning which has been an invaluable addition to CoolSys Energy Design services, particularly with cold storage distribution facilities, supermarkets and big box retailers/wholesalers.

A graduate of the University of Delaware, Chris has spent two decades focusing on sustainability and energy efficiency. He is an active member of the ASPE (American Society of Plumbing Engineers) and the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association).

BRIANA WALSH

VICE PRESIDENT

Briana Walsh has a passion for people, which is why she serves as the Vice President at CoolSys Energy Design. After transitioning from the non-profit sector in human services, she brought with her the mind-set to put “people-first” which is perfectly in line with the CoolSys mantra. Briana has a Master’s in Business Communication and BA in Journalism and Public Relations from Rider University; and she utilizes the theories of her thesis, “How Employee Engagement Equals Company Profitability” on a daily basis by motivating her team. With a role split between Sales, Marketing, and Human Resources, Briana can be found cultivating new relationships with both clients and candidates alike and would love to connect with you about a future project or career opportunity within the CoolSys team.

Yoram Perelman

VICE PRESIDENT

Yoram Perelman has over 25 years of experience in electrical engineering in a multitude of sectors including commercial, industrial and retail building design. With a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Fairleigh Dickinson University, Yoram has honed his competencies in many electrical facets such as power distribution, stand-by generation system design and building integration, lighting systems design, low-voltage systems and short circuit study and coordination. Of all the things in which he excels, Yoram’s passion is the development of conceptual engineering for new construction projects that provide the basis for an energy-efficient, coordinated design. In fact, Yoram was the lead electrical engineer and project manager of the first Silver LEED certified supermarket in the US (pilot program) where he applied energy conservation strategies and incorporated technology to reduce the energy footprint of the project. During his tenure at CSA (Clive Samuels and Associates), Yoram quickly advanced into a Senior Project Management role due to his ability to handle large-scale national accounts. Yoram takes pride in his ability to personify the CoolSys Energy Design/Energy Squared mantra for innovative solutions, on-time delivery and meeting our client’s construction and expansion design needs.

Shane Best, PE

DIRECTOR/TEXAS

Shane Best is a Director for CoolSys Energy Design with over 25 years of industry experience. He oversees the operations of a team of design and engineering professionals who support the engineering needs of customers in diverse markets nationwide. He has a strong business acumen. He is adept at motivating business teams to get results and leveraging relationship building, empowering employees to increase revenue and optimize business.

Shane is a Licenced Professional Engineer with an Electrical Engineering degree from Texas A&M University and a master’s in business from Southern Methodist University. He has a Commissioning Authority certification from the Association of Energy Engineers.

He has served on several non-profit and civic boards and has acquired his Advanced Toastmasters Certification, having founded a local organization in North Texas. He has been a member of IEEE since 1997, when he was the Branch Chapter Founder and Chairman of the Power Electronics and Engineering Association of IEEE at Texas A&M.

Terry Johnson

Terry Johnson is the Director for CoolSys Energy Design responsible for the California office’s operations. He has over 44 years of industry experience that he brings to the table on each and every project he is involved in. From starting in the SoCal refrigeration industry at the beginning of his career, Terry has been close to and involved in the MEPR built environment for the majority of his working llfe. Terry is a motivating and enthusiastic leader who puts his people first and always ensures that client’s needs are met.

CLIVE SAMUELS, PE

ADVISOR

With over 40 years of domestic and international facility engineering experience, Clive is a recognized leader in many aspects of building engineering and design, with a specific emphasis and passion in the design and development of optimized HVAC, refrigeration and building automation systems for commercial industrial and perishable food distribution facilities throughout the US as well as the UK, Europe, Asia and Australia.

Clive, who holds advanced degrees in Mechanical Engineering from The University Of The Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa with Majors in Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer, is a renowned specialist in building performance and facility energy consumption optimization.

He is an engaging speaker, recently presenting lectures on optimized HVAC design efficiency for food stores and perishable food distribution centers and the effect of humidity control on energy consumption, at the 2015 Food Marketing Institute National Energy Conference, and for ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Engineers) of which he is a lifetime member.

Clive is a Licensed Professional Engineer currently registered in 26 states.

ALLAN SAMUELS

ADVISOR

For over 35 years Allan Samuels, former Founder and Managing Partner of Energy Squared and newly integrated President of CoolSys Energy Design, has distinguished himself as an expert in supermarket engineering. His passion for energy efficiency, sustainability and energy conservation has made CoolSys Energy Design/Energy Squared the “go-to” firm for grocery stores, distribution centers and mixed-use store design. A graduate of Oxford Polytechnic in England, Allan’s particular specialty, energy-efficient lighting systems, is only a piece of where the CoolSys Energy Design team can add value to the MEPR (mechanical, electrical, plumbing and refrigeration) design.

With a focus on building systems life-cycle cost analysis, Allan’s expertise in the comparative advantages of different lighting systems has saved clients thousands of dollars through innovative design. Winner of the prestigious Philips Lighting Design Award, Allan is currently rated a US Green Building Council LEED AP (Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design Accredited Professional) and is a past chapter President of the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association). Allan is particularly proud of his award from the SmartCEO Organization at their Future 50 Fastest Growing Companies in New Jersey and he looks forward to continuing this growth trajectory as part of the CoolSys team.
